On the other side of the world of collectible toys, lives a little monster named Labub. He has signature sharp teeth, round eyes, and a soft heart hidden beneath his “cool” exterior, yearning for a hug. From the artist’s sketches to countless revisions of the prototype, and finally to the doll held in everyone’s hands, Labub’s birth itself is a journey about being seen. I watched it slowly grow fur and its eyes light up from its flat lines, like watching a child gradually learn to trust the world—just like Hiccup looking at Toothless and gradually letting down his guard.
Then, an idea quietly grew in my mind: what would happen if these two equally “cold on the outside but warm on the inside” little guys met?
I began to sew Toothless’s elements into Labub’s world. The black fur replicated the Night Fury’s iconic matte scales, the green round eyes hid its curiosity about the world, the small wings on its back replicated Toothless’s soaring posture, and even Toothless’s iconic ears were carefully sewn onto Labub’s headgear.
The creative process was very similar to the days when Hiccup made the tail fin for Toothless. I adjusted the curvature of the wings time and again, hoping to capture both Toothless’s agility and Labub’s round body; I repeatedly modified the embroidery on the eyes, just to replicate the contrast of Toothless’s “fierce yet irresistibly gentle” nature; I even deliberately hid Labub’s sharp teeth in the curve of his smile to recreate Toothless’s adorable softness, just as Toothless hides his fangs, only showing his docile side to Hiccup.
Finally, when the last stitch was sewn, this Labub dressed in the Toothless suit was born. Like a tiny messenger, it carried the story of “trust and companionship” from Berk to everyone who loved it. It was no longer just a doll, but a small universe formed by Toothless’s loyalty and Labub’s gentleness—reminding us that whether dragon or monster, as long as one has the courage to approach and the patience to wait, one can meet their own “Hiccup” and become someone else’s “Toothless.”
Now, it stands here, with the protection of the Night Fury and the warmth of Labub, waiting to enter your world and become your most loyal companion.
